As we introduced changes to our teaching methodology, we began to notice improvements in the ways the boys and girls learned. However, we were not satisfied. Many of us felt that children had the ability to learn far more quickly than was usually the case at school. We began to look at the question of motivation. What was it that held the attention of some children so completely that they were oblivious to all around them, even to offers of food?
This week, at St Peter’s Boys Prep, we are immersed in the Flexible Learning Programme (FLP). The first FLP week was introduced earlier this year when parents could not get their children to school due to the Witkoppen roadworks. This round is however taking place at school, but includes all the aspects of a self-managed, interest driven programme that were identified as being valuable in the feedback received from last term.
On Thursday, 9 July 2015, the St Peter’s Grade 6 Boys were visited by the Junior Engineers for Africa (JEFA). JEFA holds workshops to give the boys a basic introduction to technology, communication and engineering principles such as: structures, wheels and axles, levers, pulleys and gears using LEGO.
Today, Friday 26 June 2015, was a mark in history for St Peter’s School. The New St Peter’s Boys Junior Prep was blessed by The Rt Rev Dr Steve Moreo, Bishop of Johannesburg in a beautiful and moving service, attended by the boys Grade 0 to 4, parents, staff and dignitaries.
The Thinking Skills open morning was well attended and parents enjoyed the opportunity to observe the children using numerous Thinking Skills tools and routines. Parents were given a brief overview of our Thinking Skills programme and then moved from class to class (from Grade 0 to 7) observing numerous activities.
Today I slipped away from my desk, camera in hand and started sneaking after the wildlife on campus. No, this time I was not taking snaps of the boys but rather the beautiful and majestic peafowl that we are so fortunate to have wandering around on the St Peter’s Prep estate.
