The programme contains elements of both traditional and best-practice 21st century learning principles, combined with sport and cultural activities. Technology is fully integrated into all subjects. The key word is 'preparatory' and St Peter’s endeavours to prepare boys to fit successfully into their chosen high schools and the world beyond.

- Thinking Skills
In all academic programmes, the boys are encouraged to become independent critical thinkers and problem-solvers. Focus is also placed on the development of effective communication skills, both written and oral. In various classes teachers have the opportunity to team-teach, enabling enrichment of the curriculum and reinforcement of concepts as the pupils move towards mastery. Extension of learning, within the curriculum guidelines and according to interests, is encouraged.
Children are able to direct their own learning where applicable by researching new information and presenting enriching tasks to the class. The Thinking Skills programme is central to the St Peter’s approach to academic work, creating a positive culture of learning within the school. Boys explore a wide range of strategies and tools that enable and encourage higher-order thinking.
Thinking Maps, Thinking Hats, routines and other tools are incorporated into the curriculum where applicable. These thinking tools support development of in-depth and critical thinking, allowing the boys to engage meaningfully with academic work, as well as reflect on challenging circumstances and scenarios. St Peter’s is one of only two accredited Thinking Schools in Southern Africa.
