How it Works
After consultation with the teachers, or on request by parents, The ASU will assess the needs of a pupil. A specialist team identifies the problems experienced by the individual and strategies are put in place to best overcome these barriers.
Group support within the classroom has been introduced for all pupils from Grade 1 - 6. This process is facilitated by an inclusion specialist to the benefit of all pupils.
Individual educational programmes are designed for girls where necessary and group or individual therapy sessions arranged. These take place during the morning and the frequency and timing of sessions is scheduled to meet the needs of the individual. Additional assistance is given in the classroom, particularly during Mathematics and English. Therapists and teachers work closely together and parents receive termly progress reports. The goal of the ASU is to put strategies into place to enable the pupil, as far and as quickly as possible, to meet the demands of the academic programme.
Benefits
- The collaborative approach between teachers and therapists provides for a far greater degree of understanding of the problem than is possible when a girl consults a therapist off the campus
- Teaching staff gain a greater understanding of the complexities of learning and consequently are far better equipped to apply strategies in the classroom to meet the needs of all the girls
- Frequent meetings of the therapy team and staff ensure that progress is constantly monitored
- The therapy team acts as a resource for all staff
- Girls need no feel “different” since the system is so much a part of the school day
- On-site therapy eliminates the inconvenience of travel and access
